When Joni Moore Kanazawa moved to Fredericksburg and was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 34 years old, she discovered something remarkable about our community: strangers became family, showing up with meals, encouragement, and unwavering support during her darkest days.

That experience transformed into a mission that has now touched thousands of local families through Ellie's Elves, a Fredericksburg-based nonprofit that brings hope to those facing unforeseen crises.

A Legacy of Light

The organization was inspired by Princess Ellie Blaine, a bright-eyed toddler who bravely battled pineoblastoma, a rare brain cancer, before passing away on December 22, 2013, just before her third birthday. What started as a rallying cry to support Ellie's family has evolved into a movement of over 3,400 volunteers—"Elves"—who step up whenever a need arises in our community.

Beyond Traditional Charity

What sets Ellie's Elves apart is their comprehensive approach. While many organizations focus on specific services, this group responds to whatever families truly need. Assistant Director Elizabeth Nast and Joni work together to mobilize their army of volunteers for everything from building accessibility ramps for cancer patients to delivering hot meals, providing emergency supplies after house fires, and creating magical moments for terminally ill children.

One of their most heartwarming initiatives brought Whoville to life in a Stafford County front yard for a six-year-old boy with a terminal brain disease whose favorite character was the Grinch. The organization maintains donation closets stocked with clothing, housewares, and toiletries, plus "Ellie's Toy Closet" filled with new toys and books for pediatric patients.

How You Can Help

Ellie's Elves continues to grow through community partnerships and volunteer involvement. They're always seeking donations, volunteers, and community members willing to shine light during someone's darkest hour.

As Joni says, their mission is simple but powerful: to show families in crisis that good still exists in this world—in the form of thousands of caring neighbors who may have never met them but are ready to help.
