Lace Up, Fredericksburg: Roller Derby Returns June 27 With a Triple-Header Throwdown

The wheels are turning and the 2026 home season is here. On Saturday, June 27, Fredericksburg Roller Derby takes over the Fredericksburg Field House for a full day of flat-track action: three bouts of hits, jams, and edge-of-your-seat speed. Skaters from Virginia Beach, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, D.C., and Richmond roll in starting at 1 p.m., building to the 5 p.m. main event, when our own Fredericksburg Chaos throw down against the River City Riff Raff. A skater-run nonprofit since 2011, the league fields two squads: the Fury, chasing regional rankings, and the Chaos, where new skaters earn their stripes. "We are excited to open our home season with a full day of roller derby and to create more opportunities for skaters at every stage of development," said president Christina Simpson, better known as "Princess Sleia."

📅 Saturday, June 27, action from 1 p.m.

Tucked into 714 Caroline Street, Duly Noted is the rare shop that makes you feel calm and a little giddy at the same time. At its heart is the Pen Bar, stocked with writing instruments from Japan, France, and beyond, the kind of pens that make you want to write everything by hand again.

From there, it only gets better: notebooks in colors you did not know you needed, greeting cards that finally say the thing, plus stickers, washi tape, letter sets, planners, studio pouches, art supplies, and gifts that actually mean something. Every shelf invites you to slow down, pick up something beautiful, and linger a little longer.

Your Guide to a Perfect Day at Lake Anna State Park

One of the best outdoor escapes around is right here in our own backyard, FXBG! Whether Lake Anna State Park is a quick five minutes from your door or a short, scenic drive away, this Spotsylvania gem is the perfect spot to soak up summer. With a sandy swim beach, miles of trails, great fishing, and even the chance to pan for real gold, there's a full day of adventure waiting close to home. Here's everything you need to make the most of it.

🏖️ Hit the beach
The park's guarded swim beach is one of the finest inland beaches in Virginia, a broad stretch of sand that slopes gently into the water. Lifeguards are on duty in the summer, and there's a bathhouse and concession area nearby. Local tip: on hot weekends and holidays, the beach can fill up by late morning, so get there early to claim your spot.

🥾 Explore the trails
With 11 trails covering more than 15 miles, there's a path for every pace. Most wind through peaceful pine and hardwood forest and are rated easy, with a few (like Gold Hill, Big Woods, and Pigeon Run) offering a bigger challenge. Many are shared-use, so you can hike, bike, or even horseback ride. Perfect for an after-dinner stroll or a weekend morning out.

🎣 Cast a line
Lake Anna is one of Virginia's premier warm-water fisheries, known for largemouth bass, crappie, striped bass, and more. There's a public boat launch and plenty of bank fishing, plus a 2-acre fishing pond near the visitor center reserved for children and visitors with disabilities. A valid Virginia fishing license is required.

⛏️ Strike gold (really!)
Here's something even some longtime locals don't know: this land was once "Gold Hill," site of an 1829 gold rush. Stop by the visitor center for exhibits on the area's mining history, then join a ranger-led gold panning program or a tour of the historic Goodwin Gold Mine. The kids will love trying their luck in the creek beds!

🏕️ Make a staycation of it
Even if you live right around the corner, a night under the stars feels like a getaway. The park offers campsites and cozy cabins, several with lake views, for an easy local retreat.

Good to know:
📍 6800 Lawyers Road, Spotsylvania Courthouse
💲 Parking: $7 per vehicle on weekdays, $10 on weekends and holidays in peak season
🐾 Pack water, sunscreen, and snacks, and check the park's website for program schedules before you go

This little slice of paradise is right in our backyard! Learn more and plan your day.
