Big changes are on the horizon for Stafford County Public Schools, but the district is taking a thoughtful, steady approach. Three new schools are set to open in August 2026: Falls Run Elementary, Crow’s Nest Elementary, and Hartwood High, each designed to relieve overcrowding and make room for Stafford’s growing student population.
Instead of launching at full capacity, the new schools will begin with smaller enrollments. Both elementary schools will open with limited class sizes, while Hartwood High will welcome only freshmen through juniors in its first year. The idea is simple: start manageable, build community, and fine-tune operations before filling every seat.
It’s not just about space; it’s about balance. With rapid population growth across the county, attendance zones have been stretched thin. Opening new schools gradually allows the district to ease transitions for families, minimize disruption, and adjust staffing where needed.
Speaking of staffing, internal teacher transfers are already underway. Up to 30% of new positions will be filled by current educators this fall, giving veteran teachers the opportunity to help shape the culture of each new school. External hiring will begin in January after updated enrollment numbers are shared with the School Board in November.
By starting small, Stafford County is doing more than opening new buildings. It’s setting them up for long-term success. These schools represent a new chapter for the community, built on careful planning and a commitment to giving every student room to grow.
