From riverside decks and rooftops to biergartens and dog-friendly patios, we’ve got you covered.
When the warm weather arrives, there's nothing quite like dining outside in this part of Virginia. Whether you're watching the Rappahannock roll by from a riverside deck, sipping something cold on a rooftop at golden hour, or indulging in a steak salad on a sidewalk café, the Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania area delivers. While many may opt for the cool air conditioning inside, if you can catch a great breeze and a good view (we’re talking the river or a prime people-watching locale 🙂) and get down on some delicious bites, that’s a win-win.
You’ll find the richest pocket for patio dining in the historic, downtown area of Fredericksburg. Brock's Riverside Grill is the standout for sheer scenery — the waterfront deck on the Rappahannock is hard to beat on a warm evening. Sky Bar's rooftop is the other can't-miss, especially at golden hour.
If cocktails and wine is your thing, Skybar’s rooftop is a can’t miss and there’s a charming new backyard patio at Burg Charcuterie on Caroline St. Don’t worry though if you’re not a drinker. We’ve included plenty of patios to satiate your hunger and inner social butterfly.
Farther North in Stafford, Grounds Bistro is your best bet for a casual, all-day patio café stop, and Zibibbo 73 is the area's only real upscale Italian with outdoor seating available. Don’t forget about Amy’s Cafe though. You could easily hit up a walking trail and then meet friends for lunch at this lovely Stafford institution.
In Spotsy, ITAVIE is a must if you love Italian food, and we have yet to meet anyone who hasn’t been enamored with the empanadas at Mama’s Kitchen. The Fredericksburg area is full of fun little patios and rooftops for outdoor dining when the summer weather hits.
We’re going to table the traditional breweries and wineries for now and stick to the establishments where eating is the main event, but, of course, your favorite breweries and wineries are options for a nice summer afternoon or evening as well (and be sure to stay tuned for that guide)!
Hours can vary seasonally, so it's always worth a quick call or a check of the restaurant's website before you go. Some patios listed aren't open every day of the week. The options below span everything from a quick lunch spot to a full evening out — organized by area so you can plan accordingly.
